The Gouden Koets

The Golden Coach is one of the most iconic symbols of the Dutch royal family. Designed by the Spijker brothers—who would later gain fame as car manufacturers—it was completed in 1898 as a gift from the city of Amsterdam to Queen Wilhelmina for her inauguration. With its gilded decorations and detailed paintings, the coach represents both craftsmanship and a slice of national history.

Traditionally, it is used on Prinsjesdag, when the king or queen travels from Noordeinde Palace to the Ridderzaal to deliver the annual Throne Speech. Surrounded by ceremony and cheering crowds, the ride embodies the connection between the monarchy and the people.

However, the coach also carries controversy. The left panel, titled “Tribute from the Colonies,” depicts colonial subjects presenting their riches to the Netherlands. Since 2011, it has sparked criticism for glorifying colonialism and promoting racial stereotypes. Members of Parliament, including Harry van Bommel and Mariko Peters, called for the panel’s removal.

In January 2022, King Willem-Alexander announced that the Golden Coach would no longer be used for official occasions for the time being. The decision reflects a growing awareness and reevaluation of national symbols in light of their historical context.
