The Hague Market

The Hague Market, or “Haagse Mart” as locals call it, is one of the liveliest places in the city. It was founded in 1938 after increasing traffic on the Prinsengracht forced the market to relocate. Since then, it has been held on Herman Costerstraat in the Transvaal neighborhood, next to the Schilderswijk. 

Over the years, it has grown into the largest open-air market in the Netherlands and one of the biggest in Europe. With over 500 stalls and around 35,000 visitors on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, it’s a vibrant melting pot of cultures and goods — from fresh produce and spices to clothing and flowers. One standout feature is the fish stalls. According to research by the Dutch Consumers’ Association,

The Hague Market has the best fish vendors in the Randstad. Top names include Vishandel Atlantic, Volendammer vishandel P. Bond & Zonen, and Vishandel Mediterrane — all praised for their freshness and wide selection. It’s also the most affordable spot to buy fresh fish fillets.
