Almada Negreiros’ Futurist Talk

Just around here in 1917, a 23 year old artist named José de Almada Negreiros walked onto the stage of Teatro da República and delivered one of the most shocking performances in Portuguese cultural history. His "Conferência/Ultimato Futurista" wasn't a lecture. It was a declaration of war. Almada Negreiros attacked everything the audience held sacred. He mocked Portugal's most celebrated writers, condemned the country's art scene as stagnant and backwards, and demanded a complete break from tradition. He championed the Italian Futurist movement, which glorified speed, machines, technology, and the destruction of old cultural values. 

The audience was stunned, some outraged, others electrified. The Teatro da República stood on Rua António Maria Cardoso, where the São Luiz Teatro Municipal now sits in a different building. That single evening transformed Almada Negreiros from an unknown provocateur into a leading figure of Portuguese Modernism. He went on to create some of Portugal's most important 20th century murals, including works at the Gare Marítima de Alcântara and the University of Lisbon. His futurist ultimatum challenged an entire generation to rethink what Portuguese art and culture could become. The manifesto he read that night helped spark a cultural revolution that would reshape the nation's artistic identity for decades.
