Almada Negreiros Murals, Alcântara

Right here, eight monumental murals transform this maritime passenger hall into one of Portugal's most striking artistic landmarks. José de Almada Negreiros, the country's leading modernist artist, completed these powerful frescoes in 1945 at the Gare Marítima de Alcântara, a place where thousands of travelers once waited to board ships crossing the Atlantic. Born in São Tomé and Príncipe in 1893, Almada Negreiros was a self taught visionary who revolutionized Portuguese art through painting, writing, and design. In 1943, Minister Duarte Pacheco commissioned him to decorate this riverfront terminal designed by architect Pardal Monteiro.

The artist created two large triptychs and two individual panels celebrating everyday life along the Tagus waterfront. The eastern wall features his panel "Ó terra onde eu nasci" (Oh land where I was born). Other sections show riverside women carrying coal baskets on their heads and working with fish beside wooden boats. Almada used brilliant colors that made these scenes come alive, though the green pigments have deteriorated most over the decades.

The murals covered 140 square meters of wall space. After decades hidden from public view, these frescoes became part of an interpretation centre where visitors can finally appreciate Almada's vision. The station sits 800 meters from the Rocha do Conde de Óbidos terminal, where he painted similar murals in 1949.
