Argentina Santos & Parreirinha de Alfama

Here is the tiny restaurant in Alfama where an illiterate woman became one of fado's greatest voices and turned a former charcoal shop into a legendary music shrine. Argentina Santos was born in the Mouraria neighborhood in 1924 and left school so early she couldn't read or write for most of her life. She loved singing, but her first two husbands forbade her from performing in public.

Only after her second husband died in the late 1940s could she finally pursue her dream. In 1950, Santos took over Parreirinha de Alfama on Beco do Espírito Santo. Officially registered as the cook, she sang fado there with a voice people described as having the power of a street vendor's cry mixed with the quiet devotion of a prayer. The intimate venue became a gathering place for fado legends like Amália Rodrigues and Alfredo Marceneiro, establishing itself as a reference point for authentic traditional music.

Santos ran Parreirinha de Alfama for decades, rarely leaving the neighborhood. Her talent eventually brought international recognition. She performed at the Edinburgh Festival and appeared on Brazilian television in 1996. The Portuguese government honored her with prestigious awards in 2005 and 2013. She continued leading the restaurant until the early 2000s, passing away in 2019 at age 95.
