Armazéns do Chiado Reopens

On this very ground where shoppers now browse modern boutiques, flames once consumed an entire neighborhood in one of the most catastrophic urban fires of the 20th century. The Armazéns do Chiado, a beloved department store in the historic Chiado district, was completely destroyed on August 25, 1988. The fire started in the early hours at the Grandella store on Rua do Carmo and rapidly spread through 18 buildings, covering 8000 square meters.

Two people died, 73 were injured, and nearly 2000 workers lost their jobs overnight. It took 1,680 firefighters from across the country until 4 PM to extinguish the blaze. The disaster was so severe that locals compared it to the devastation of the 1755 earthquake. Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, who would later win the prestigious Pritzker Prize, was chosen to lead the reconstruction in 1989. His approach was revolutionary: keep the original façades intact while completely rebuilding the interiors with modern construction and safety standards.

The new Armazéns do Chiado opened in 1999 as a contemporary shopping center. Siza's design transformed the ruins into a functional space that honored the past while serving the present. The project breathed new life into the quarter, proving that historical districts could adapt without losing their soul.
