Benfica

Welcome to a neighborhood that gave its name to one of the world's largest sports clubs. But the story began elsewhere, along the riverside in Belém, where boys kicked a football and dreamed big. On February 28, 1904, these young players founded Sport Lisboa, choosing red colors and an eagle as their symbol. They met at Farmácia Franco and played on borrowed fields. Financial struggles nearly destroyed them. In 1907, eight key players defected to rival Sporting, sparking Portugal's most intense football rivalry that continues to this day.

Sport Lisboa survived, and on September 13, 1908, everything changed. They merged with Grupo Sport Benfica, a local cycling club that owned a football field called Campo da Feiteira right here in this district. The merger was brilliant: Sport Lisboa kept their football team, red shirts, and eagle. Grupo Sport Benfica contributed their field, clubhouse, and directors. A bicycle wheel was added to the crest, honoring the cycling heritage. The combined club took a new name: Sport Lisboa e Benfica.

They never dropped from Portugal's top division and now have 400,000 members, making them the world's largest sports club by membership. Their Estádio da Luz, just north of here, seats over 68,000 passionate fans.
