Bertrand: Oldest Bookshop

Right here in Chiado stands the world's oldest bookshop still selling books, a place where pages have turned for nearly three centuries. Bertrand opened in 1732 when a French merchant named Pedro Faure set up a small book stall on this corner. The business grew quickly, and within 15 years, two brothers named Bertrand became partners.

When Faure died in 1753, they took over completely, giving the shop the name it carries today. Then came 1755. The massive earthquake that shook the city destroyed the original shop along with most of the surrounding buildings. Everything seemed lost. But the Bertrand brothers rebuilt. By 1773, they reopened at the current location on Rua Garrett, and the bookshop has never closed since.

This wasn't just any bookshop. Portugal's most famous writers gathered here. Fernando Pessoa, the poet whose words defined a generation, spent hours browsing these shelves. Eça de Queirós, the country's greatest novelist, was a regular customer. The shop survived political upheavals, wars, and economic crashes. In 2011, Guinness World Records made it official: Bertrand is the oldest operating bookshop on Earth, 279 years of continuous business under one name.
