Birth of King Carlos I

Right here in this palace, a future king took his first breath on 28 September 1863, a boy who would become Portugal's last effective monarch. Dom Carlos I was born within these walls of Palácio da Ajuda, the eldest son of King Luís I and Queen Maria Pia of Savoy. The palace had only recently become the royal residence in 1861, still incomplete but already housing the monarchy.

Carlos spent his childhood in these neoclassical rooms, preparing for a role he never imagined would end so violently. He was educated in politics, arts, and sciences, developing a particular passion for oceanography that made him a respected researcher among European scholars. When his father died in 1889, Carlos inherited the throne at 26. He faced a country drowning in debt, political chaos, and growing calls to abolish the monarchy altogether.

He tried to stabilize Portugal's finances and supported scientific expeditions, but economic hardship turned many citizens against the crown. Republican movements gained strength, demanding an end to royal rule. On 1 February 1908, Carlos and his eldest son Luís Filipe were shot dead in Terreiro do Paço by republican activists. The assassination shocked Europe. Carlos became the first reigning European monarch killed in the 20th century. His second son, Manuel II, took the throne but ruled only two years before revolution ended the Portuguese monarchy in 1910.
