Camilla Watson’s Mouraria Faces

Before your eyes is one of the most powerful tributes to everyday people you'll find anywhere in Europe. Giant black and white photographs cover the walls and doorways of Mouraria, showing the real faces of this historic neighborhood where over 50 nationalities live together. British photographer Camilla Watson created this installation in 2012, but not in the way most artists work. She spent months walking these narrow streets, drinking coffee with locals, and listening to their stories.

The project became truly collaborative. Residents themselves chose who would be photographed and exactly where each portrait would appear on the crumbling buildings. You'll see the Cape Verdean grandmother who arrived here 40 years ago, the Portuguese fishmonger who has worked the same corner for decades, and the Bangladeshi shop owner who keeps his store open late for the community. Each face represents a life lived in one of the city's oldest and most overlooked quarters.

Watson worked directly with the Mouraria community association to ensure every portrait honored the person behind it. The photographs aren't just decoration. They reclaim abandoned spaces and give visibility to people who built their lives here but were rarely seen or heard by outsiders. This neighborhood, once home to Moorish communities centuries ago, continues its tradition of welcoming newcomers from around the world.
