The first came in 1991, updating the facilities while preserving the structure. Then in 2013, architect António Maria Braga reimagined the interior space. He added communal dining areas and gourmet food stalls, creating a new kind of market experience. Braga's sensitive approach to traditional architecture later earned him the 2019 Rafael Manzano Prize. Walk inside and you'll see how past and present coexist. Elderly vendors who've worked here for decades sell their fresh catch beside modern sushi counters.

Families still shop for groceries at the original stalls, while others sit at shared tables enjoying wine and Portuguese petiscos.
