Elevador da Glória

Right here, history unfolded on October 24, 1885, when the Elevador da Glória began its first ascent, becoming the second funicular railway to operate in the Portuguese capital. This steep yellow railway connects Praça dos Restauradores with the hilltop Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, conquering 275 meters of one of the city's most challenging inclines. Engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard designed the original system with remarkable ingenuity.

Water filled tanks in each wooden cabin created a counterweight mechanism, allowing the two cars to balance each other as one descended while the other climbed. Within a year, operators switched to steam power for greater reliability and efficiency. Steam engines drove the funicular for three decades until 1915 brought a major transformation. Electricity replaced steam, modernizing the entire operation and making journeys smoother and faster. The iconic yellow paint was added in the 1920s, creating the distinctive appearance that defines this landmark.

The funicular still operates with two wooden cabins, carrying passengers up the steep gradient between the lower town and the elevated Bairro Alto district. What began as an innovative engineering solution remains an essential part of daily life for locals navigating the hilly terrain.
