“Fado Vadio” Mural

Around here is the story of how six friends turned a forgotten stairway into a tribute to the music that defines Portugal's soul. The Fado Vadio mural on the Escadinhas de São Cristóvão came to life in 2012 when Hugo Makarov, Mário Belém, Nuno Saraiva, Pedro Soares Neves, UAT, and Vanessa Teodoro picked up their brushes. These artists, all living in the Mouraria neighborhood, wanted to honor the place where fado was born.

Fado emerged right here in the 1830s and 1840s, in the taverns and narrow streets of Mouraria. This melancholic music, sung to the sound of the Portuguese guitar, expressed the longing and sorrow of sailors, bohemians, and working people. It became so significant that UNESCO recognized it as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. The mural transforms the stairway connecting Rua da Madalena to the Church of São Cristóvão into an open air gallery.

Bold colors bring to life the guitars, the singers, and the raw emotion that makes fado unforgettable. The project was organized by Movimento dos Amigos de São Cristóvão, locals determined to celebrate their neighborhood's cultural heritage through street art. What started as blank walls became a permanent reminder that this neighborhood gave Portugal one of its most powerful artistic expressions.
