Fernando Maurício, King of Fado

This street carries the memory of a voice that made Portugal weep and smile. Fernando Maurício, born right here on Rua do Capelão in 1933, would become known as the King of Fado, one of the most powerful singers to emerge from the Mouraria neighborhood where this deeply emotional music first took root. 

What made Maurício exceptional was his gift appearing so early. As a child, his voice was already so remarkable that authorities had to grant him special permission to perform professionally, something rarely done for someone so young. He sang for three years, then mysteriously stepped away from the stage, only to return later and complete a career that would change fado forever. In the late 1960s, Maurício helped bring fado from the intimate taverns of Mouraria to television screens across Portugal. 

His performances were so moving that he received awards directly from the Portuguese president. Even the legendary Amália Rodrigues, herself the queen of fado, honored him by unveiling a memorial plaque on this street in 1989. When Maurício died in 2003 at age 69, the neighborhood lost its voice. Since 2015, Casa Fernando Maurício has opened its doors here, displaying his complete recordings, rare concert footage, and personal interviews that preserve the spirit of Mouraria's greatest fadista.
