First Electric Tram from Santo Amaro

It began at 6 in the morning on 31 August 1901, when the first electric tram in the city rolled out from the Santo Amaro depot, heading toward Cais do Sodré and Ribamar. This single journey marked the beginning of a transport revolution that would transform how people moved through these steep, winding streets. Before this moment, residents relied on horse drawn carriages and cable cars to navigate the challenging hills. The animals struggled with the gradients, and the cable system was slow and limited.

The introduction of electric trams solved these problems almost overnight, offering a faster, cleaner, and more reliable way to travel. The change happened remarkably fast. Within just one year, the entire network had been electrified. The press initially criticized the project, questioning whether the electrical systems were safe. But the trams quickly proved their worth, and what started as an experiment became an essential part of daily life.

The Santo Amaro depot, where that first historic tram departed, still functions as a working facility. It now houses the Museu da Carris, where the vehicles that changed urban transport are preserved. That August morning in 1901 didn't just introduce a new machine. It reshaped the entire city, making impossible journeys routine and connecting neighborhoods that had been difficult to reach.
