This bookshop is so small that only one person can browse inside at a time, yet it holds nearly 4,000 books within just 4 square meters. Livraria do Simão sits at the beginning of Escadinhas de São Cristóvão, often called one of the smallest bookshops in the world. The story begins with Simão Carneiro, a chemistry professor who left teaching to follow his true passion. In 2008, he transformed a former tobacco shop into this remarkable literary space.

The tiny room that once sold cigarettes now overflows with secondhand Portuguese literature, poetry, and novels. Walk past and you'll see books stacked from floor to ceiling, spilling out onto a small outdoor shelf. Carneiro carefully curates his collection, focusing mainly on Portuguese authors, though English and French titles hide among the packed shelves for those willing to search.

The shop operates without regular hours. Carneiro opens when he can, treating each visit as a personal encounter rather than a transaction. Locals know to check if the door is open, and when it is, they're welcomed into what feels more like a book lover's private library than a commercial shop. The space proves that a passion for literature needs no grand building, just dedication and love for the written word.
