LX Factory

This place was once the heartbeat of industrial Alcântara, where textile machines roared beneath what would become the towering red pillars of the 25 de Abril Bridge. In 1846, the Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense established one of the city's largest manufacturing complexes here, a sprawling 23,000 square meter site that employed hundreds of workers. The factory produced textiles for decades before food processing companies and printing houses took over the massive brick buildings.

By the early 2000s, the complex stood silent and abandoned, its machinery rusted and windows shattered. Then artists and entrepreneurs arrived. In 2008, they transformed the derelict industrial site into LX Factory, a creative village that kept the original factory character intact. Walking through the cobbled streets, you pass weathered brick walls covered in vibrant street art, including a massive bee sculpture by artist Bordalo II, constructed entirely from recycled waste materials.

The Ler Devagar bookstore occupies a former printing facility, with floor to ceiling bookshelves and original printing presses suspended from the ceiling. Over 50 independent businesses now fill the warehouses, from design studios to restaurants. Every Sunday, the streets host a flea market where vendors sell vintage clothing and handmade crafts in this reimagined industrial quarter.
