The small Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Saúde became the heart of this tradition, serving as both the starting point and final destination of the annual procession. Mouraria, named after the Moorish population resettled here following the Christian reconquest of 1147, was home to the city's most vulnerable communities, those hit hardest when disease struck. For over 400 years, residents have carried the sacred image of Our Lady through narrow alleyways, their voices joined in prayer and song.

What began as a desperate plea for divine protection against illness became a powerful expression of community resilience.
