Pink Street Revamp

Here at Rua Nova do Carvalho in Cais do Sodré, the pavement beneath your feet tells the story of one of the boldest urban transformations in recent memory. In December 2011, this entire street was painted bright pink overnight, turning a notorious red light district into an unexpected symbol of renewal. For decades, this narrow street was known for brothels, sailors on shore leave, and a reputation most locals avoided after dark. The area around the docks attracted sex workers, cheap bars, and the kind of nightlife that kept families away.

But architect José Adrião saw potential where others saw decay. The pink paint was deliberate. It announced that change had arrived. The shocking color made international headlines and drew curious visitors who had never ventured into this corner of the waterfront district before. By 2013, the entire street was redesigned as a pedestrian zone with new paving, modern lighting, and street furniture.

The transformation worked beyond expectations. Music venues, contemporary bars, and art spaces moved in. A younger crowd discovered the area. What locals once called the red light district became known simply as Pink Street, or Rua Cor de Rosa. The faded pink pavement you walk on now marks where an architect's bold idea proved that sometimes the simplest gesture can rewrite a neighborhood's entire story.
