The building around you has lived several lives. What began as a convent in the 1600s, tucked into the Marquês de Pombal neighborhood, has been transformed into one of Lisbon's most celebrated modern restaurants. And somehow, the soul of the place survived every chapter.

Take a moment to notice the details. Those hand-painted ceramic tiles covering the walls are called Azulejos, a Portuguese tradition stretching back centuries. The frescoes, the carved stone doorframes, the worn floors beneath your feet: all of it was carefully preserved when the convent was restored and reimagined as the Hotel Locke de Santa Joana.

At the center of this space is Santa Joana restaurant, led by Nuno Mendes, a chef with an international reputation who returned to his roots to create something genuinely meaningful here. His menu draws directly from the traditions of Portuguese cooking, flavors built over generations from the Atlantic coast, the countryside, and everything in between.
