Sporting CP

This place was once a private estate belonging to the Viscount of Alvalade, where a grandson's ambitious vision changed Portuguese football forever. On July 1, 1906, José Alvalade founded Sporting Clube de Portugal on his grandfather's land with a bold promise: "We want Sporting to be a big club, as big as the biggest in Europe." The Viscount provided the funds and became the club's first president.

They chose green as their color, the color of hope. What started as a multi-sport club quickly grew into one of Portugal's most successful institutions. The club's golden era arrived in the 1940s with the legendary "Cinco Violinos" (Five Violins). This attacking quintet of Fernando Peyroteo, José Travassos, Albano Pereira, Jesus Correia, and Manuel Vasques earned their musical nickname for their perfectly synchronized play. Between 1947 and 1954, they dominated Portuguese football, winning 7 league championships in just 8 seasons.

José Alvalade tragically died of pneumonia in 1918 at age 33, never seeing his dream fully realized. The stadium that stands here bears his name, honoring the man who transformed this estate into the birthplace of one of Portugal's "Big Three" clubs that later produced world stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Luís Figo.
