Viking Raids

Long before the castle walls stood guard over the Tagus River, a fleet of 80 dragon headed longships appeared on the horizon. It was August 844 when Scandinavian warriors stormed this thriving Muslim port, beginning 13 days of terror that would change coastal defenses forever. The Vikings were not just raiders passing through. They systematically looted the city, taking everything of value while engaging in fierce battles with local defenders.

Governor Wahballah ibn Hazm sent desperate messages to the Emir in Córdoba, warning that warriors from the frozen North had penetrated this far south for the first time. This marked the earliest major Viking attack on the Iberian Peninsula. After draining the city's wealth, the Norse fleet sailed down to Seville, where Muslim forces finally organized a successful counterattack.

The impact was lasting. Islamic rulers immediately began strengthening fortifications along the coast and building proper naval defenses. When Vikings returned 122 years later in 966 with 28 ships, they found a very different reception and were decisively driven back into the Atlantic.
