Borough Market

Borough Market, located in the Southwark district at the southern end of London Bridge, is one of London’s oldest and most renowned markets. Close to the London Bridge tube station and Southwark Cathedral, it primarily serves as a food market but also offers flowers and other products. Historical records from 1276 mention the market, though historians believe it may have been a trading site for centuries before that. In the 13th century, Southwark residents already relied on this market for their daily needs.

The current market building, designed by Henry Rose, was constructed in 1851. Over the years, it has seen several renovations, including the addition of an Art Deco entrance on Southwark Street in 1932. Major renovations began in 2001, and in 2004, the market expanded with the addition of the South Portico from Covent Garden’s Floral Hall. This structure was relocated due to the Royal Opera House's reconstruction in the 1990s. Borough Market is a vibrant hub for restaurants and shops sourcing fresh produce and ingredients.

It opens to the public from Wednesday to Saturday, offering a wide variety of local and international foods, attracting both locals and tourists. Its rich history, combined with a dynamic atmosphere and an array of culinary delights, makes Borough Market a cornerstone of London’s food scene and a must-visit destination for food enthusiasts.
