Carnaby Street

You are in the heart of Swinging London, standing on the street that changed fashion forever. This narrow pedestrian walkway between Beak Street and Great Marlborough Street became the global epicentre of 1960s youth culture and style revolution. In 1957, a Glasgow-born entrepreneur named John Stephen opened His Clothes here, the first boutique that would transform this shabby Soho backstreet from sweat shops and tailors into the most famous fashion destination on earth.

Stephen was a visionary who understood what young people wanted: bold colours, new styles, and clothes that broke every rule. By the mid 1960s, the street exploded into a cultural phenomenon. Time Magazine declared in 1966 that nothing illustrated the new swinging city better than this three-block-long street crammed with trendsetting boutiques. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, and Jimi Hendrix all shopped here regularly, alongside style icons like Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor. Stephen alone owned multiple shops along this pedestrian strip, earning him the title The King of Carnaby Street.

When Lady Jane boutique opened in May 1966 with live models dressing and undressing in the window, crowds of spectators brought the entire street to a complete standstill. In 1973, the street became fully pedestrianised, removing all vehicle traffic and creating the car-free shopping experience visitors enjoy near Oxford Circus station.
