Normam Shaw Buildings

This is the fortress that once housed the world's most famous police force, built directly on top of an unsolved murder scene. Standing along Victoria Embankment with commanding views over the River Thames, these striking buildings of red brick and white stone are the Norman Shaw Buildings, the original home of New Scotland Yard. Architect Richard Norman Shaw designed them between 1887 and 1906 to serve as the Metropolitan Police headquarters. The North Building looks like a medieval castle with Scottish towers and Flemish gables, deliberately intimidating to deter riots.

Shaw crafted every detail to project power and authority from its riverside position. In 1888, construction workers uncovered a dismembered woman's body buried on site. Known as the Whitehall Mystery, investigators never identified her or caught her killer. The case remains one of Victorian England's most haunting unsolved murders. The buildings rose on land reclaimed from the Thames where an abandoned opera house once stood.

Convict laborers from Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor prisons quarried the granite foundation, costing 120,000 pounds to complete. The Metropolitan Police operated from here until 1967, when they relocated to Broadway. Parliament acquired the buildings in 1979 for office space. The Leader of the Opposition has maintained offices here since Michael Howard's tenure, with subsequent leaders including David Cameron, Ed Miliband, Jeremy Corbyn, and Keir Starmer working within these historic walls.
