Queen Elizabeth

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was born in 1926, third in line to a throne she was never supposed to inherit. Everything changed in 1936, when her uncle Edward VIII shocked the world by abdicating to marry an American divorcée, a move considered scandalous at the time. Her father became King George VI, and suddenly Elizabeth was heir to the British Crown.

When George VI died unexpectedly in 1952, Elizabeth was just 25 years old. Her coronation the following year was the first ever televised, bringing the ceremony into living rooms across Britain and beyond. It was a deliberate signal: the monarchy would move with the times.

And move it did. Over seven decades, Elizabeth met 13 British Prime Ministers, from Winston Churchill to Liz Truss, supported over 600 charities, and watched as dozens of former British colonies gained independence and joined the Commonwealth, a voluntary association of nations she deeply valued. She navigated personal crises, public grief, and the relentless scrutiny of the modern media age with quiet resilience.

She passed away in September 2022 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, at the age of 96. In the end, the woman who never planned on being queen turned out to be rather good at it.
