Bassin de la Villette

At the northern edge of the 19th arrondissement lies the Bassin de la Villette – the largest artificial lake in Paris. Measuring 800 meters long and 70 meters wide, it connects the Canal de l’Ourcq with the Canal Saint‑Martin and forms part of the city’s iconic canal network. Originally built in 1808 as a water reservoir, the basin has become a vibrant meeting place.

Along the quays you’ll find trendy cafés, floating cinemas, and in summer “Paris Plages” zones with free swimming pools and water activities. During the warmest months, pools and boats fill the basin, welcoming up to a thousand swimmers each day, both in the water and along the quay.

Every year, the Fête du Bassin is celebrated with concerts, theatre performances, and fireworks from the Passerelle de la Moselle. Sports lovers can also enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and rowing here. A stroll along the water takes you past historic features like the hydraulic lift bridge of Rue de Crimée and a lively mix of culture and leisure. Bassin de la Villette is truly an urban square on the water.
