Canal Saint-Martin 

Strolling along Canal Saint‑Martin in the 10th and 11th arrondissements, you walk beside a historic waterway that has served the city since 1802. Built under Napoleon and completed in 1825, the canal supplied fresh drinking water, transported grain from the Ourcq region and helped clean the streets.

Today, you walk past bridges, locks and pedestrian paths beside the water. Every ten years the canal is drained for cleaning; surprising items are often retrieved: bicycles, signs, trash bins and sometimes rare artifacts. Along its banks lie cafés, restaurants and galleries overlooking the water in a relaxed atmosphere.
