De Terassen

We are standing here on the corner of Boulevard Saint‑Germain, right between Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore. These two cafés, only a few steps apart, were once the meeting places of the world’s most famous writers and thinkers. In the 1930s and 1940s, Jean‑Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir spent their days here, writing, debating and observing.

On one side, at Les Deux Magots, surrealists and existentialists gathered. On the other, at Café de Flore, philosophers, poets and journalists came together to dissect life over a strong espresso or a glass of wine. Albert Camus, Ernest Hemingway and Pablo Picasso also frequented these spots, each with their own circle of friends and ideas.
