Musée de la Vie Romantique

A few blocks away you look up at the townhouse at 16 Rue Chaptal housing the Musée de la Vie Romantique. This nineteenth-century museum offers an intimate view into the Romantic era in Paris.

Originally the home of painter Ary Scheffer, his daughter Cornelia continued hosting cultural salons after his death in eighteen fifty-eight. The French government acquired the house in the nineteen fifties and opened it as a museum.

Inside are original paintings, drawings and personal possessions—including Scheffer’s “The Sorrows of Francesca” alongside works by Delacroix and Courbet. The garden contains a tea salon where visitors may relax. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM; access to temporary exhibitions may require additional fees.
