Pigalle

Located between the 9th and 18th arrondissements, Pigalle is a neighbourhood known for art, cabaret and revival. Initially established as a working-class area in the 18th century, it drew artists like Degas and Toulouse‑Lautrec in the 19th century due to affordable housing near Montmartre.

In 1889 the Moulin Rouge opened on Boulevard de Clichy, becoming a symbol of Parisian cabaret culture. In the 20th century, Crazy Horse (founded in 1951) solidified its reputation as a centre for adult entertainment. After World War II, Pigalle declined, but in the late 20th and early 21st centuries underwent renewal.

Historic buildings were restored; new cafés, galleries and theatres opened, and tourism returned. Today Pigalle offers a vibrant blend of past and present, by day and by night.
