Students Against the Occupation

November 17, 1939. Before dawn, SS troops stormed student dormitories across the city. You're standing near where Czech higher education was destroyed in a single night. Where 1,200 students were dragged from their beds at 4 AM. Where nine were executed by sunset. It started three weeks earlier. October 28 was Independence Day under the old republic. Students marched against the Nazi occupation. The Gestapo opened fire into the crowd. Jan Opletal, a medical student, was hit. He died on November 11. His funeral became a mass protest. Thousands packed the streets. That was enough. The Nazis struck back hard. They raided every dormitory before sunrise on November 17. Nine student leaders were shot without trial that same day. The rest were shipped to concentration camps. Then came the order: all Czech universities closed. Not suspended. Closed. For six years. Czech higher education simply stopped existing. But the brutality backfired. November 17 became International Students' Day worldwide. The crackdown was so extreme it galvanized resistance and turned more of the world against the Reich. The universities reopened in 1945. The executed students never came back. Their names are carved into memorials in the streets around you.
