Arboterum Trompenburg

Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum is a lush oasis on the edge of Rotterdam’s bustling city center. Spanning 8 hectares, this botanical garden offers tranquility, beauty, and rich biodiversity for every nature lover.

The name ‘Trompenburg’ traces back to a former estate of Slot Honingen. In the 17th century, a country house stood here, later demolished in 1833. In 1859, James Smith settled on the nearby estate Zomerlust and took over Trompenburg. The transformation into a landscaped park began around 1820, and some trees from that period—such as summer oaks and maples—still stand tall today.

The gardens feature diverse styles, from English landscape design to a food forest and a desert greenhouse filled with cacti and succulents. Trompenburg is not just a place for peace, but also for learning and wonder.

Recognized as a municipal monument and registered as a museum, Trompenburg proudly carries the title ‘The Green Museum of Rotterdam,’ offering a unique blend of nature and history.
