Binnenrotte

The Binnenrotte is the vibrant heart of Rotterdam, telling the city’s story from its origins to the modern metropolis it is today. Located between the Coolsingel and Hoogstraat, it’s the largest square in the city and rich in historical significance.

Originally part of the Rotte River, this area was where Rotterdam’s earliest settlement developed. In 1871, the river section was filled in to make way for a railway viaduct, later replaced by the Willemsspoortunnel. Despite these changes, the Binnenrotte remained the city’s symbolic center.

Today, the square is known for its bustling markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays—among the largest in the Netherlands—where trade thrives and people from all walks of life gather.

Surrounding the Binnenrotte are striking landmarks: the glass-fronted Markthal, the modern Central Library, the iconic Cube Houses, and the historic Laurenskerk—all blending past and present into one unique cityscape.
