Coolsingel

Here we are on the Coolsingel, the boulevard that forms the heart of Rotterdam. What was once a city canal has evolved into a symbol of the city: a place of power, destruction, reconstruction, and celebration. The name 'Coolsingel' refers to the former fiefdom of Cool. In the Middle Ages, the Coolvest canal separated the city from its surroundings. Between 1913 and 1922, this canal was filled in to create a wide urban boulevard, a vision of Mayor Zimmerman. 

The new cityscape was marked by representative buildings such as the city hall, the post office, and the stock exchange. On May 14, 1940, the Coolsingel was heavily damaged by the German bombing. Yet, some icons, like the city hall, remained standing. After the war, the Coolsingel was rebuilt as a central traffic artery with space for trams, cars, and pedestrians. 

Between 2018 and 2021, the Coolsingel underwent a major redesign. Car traffic was reduced from four to two lanes, and more space was given to pedestrians and cyclists. The boulevard regained its grandeur with wide sidewalks, new trees, and lighting. The Coolsingel is not just a traffic route, but also a place for gathering. 

Championships are celebrated here, such as the legendary 1970 celebration of Feyenoord, when the club became the first Dutch team to win the European Cup. Events like the marathon and the Summer Carnival also take place here.
