Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Rotterdam has never been a city that plays it safe, and the museum standing before you in Museum Park is proof of that. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen carries the names of two men whose generosity shaped this place entirely. Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans donated his personal collection to the city back in 1849, and decades later, Daniël George van Beuningen added his own impressive trove to the mix. Two collectors, one remarkable institution.

The building itself tells a story of its own. The original structure dates from 1935, designed by architect Ad van der Steur, and it has since been expanded by several modern architects who layered new additions onto the old bones. The result is a building that feels like a conversation between eras rather than a single fixed statement.

What truly sets this museum apart, though, is the Collection Building. It is the world's first publicly accessible art storage facility, a transparent depot where you can actually see thousands of works that would normally be hidden away in climate-controlled silence. Seeing storage reimagined as spectacle is genuinely something else.

Between tours, workshops, and lectures, there is always something happening here. Apparently, keeping thousands of masterpieces behind glass just was not ambitious enough.
