On May 14, 1940, German bombers reduced the heart of Rotterdam to ash and rubble in a matter of hours. It remains one of the most devastating aerial bombardments in Western European history, and standing here, you are in exactly the right place to feel the weight of that day.

Museum Rotterdam '40-'45 NOW brings that story back to life in a way that is genuinely hard to forget. At the center of the exhibition is an eight-meter-long interactive table called the Experience. As you lean in, you hear the bombs falling, the walls cracking, the desperate cries of people who lost everything in an afternoon. Then comes silence. A flattened city. A hollow skyline where life used to be.

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from ten to five, and Sunday from eleven to five. If history tends to feel distant to you, this is the place that will change your mind about that.
