Norwegian Seamen's Church

In the late 19th century, Rotterdam attracted many Norwegian sailors through the VOC. This community brought their faith and traditions. In 1888, they were granted permission to build a wooden church in the harbor—a spiritual refuge for fellow Norwegians. Pastor Jens Andreas Saxe received approval in 1906 to build a larger church in Het Park, funded by generous donations, including from the King of Denmark. Completed in 1914 and consecrated by a bishop from Bergen, it suffered damage during the 1941 bombings but was later restored. Since 1999, the church has been a national monument and remains a vital place for reflection, community, and cultural exchange.
