Recycled Park

In Rotterdam's Rijnhaven floats a remarkable park: a green island constructed from plastic waste that once polluted the Maas River. Architect Ramon Knoester, founder of CLEAR RIVERS, witnessed the growing pile of litter along the quays and decided to take action. His idea: not just to clean up the waste, but to transform it into something valuable.

With the help of volunteers and specially developed litter traps, floating debris was collected from the river. The usable plastic was recycled into hexagonal modules which, once connected, form a floating park. In July 2018, the first 140 square meters of the Recycled Park were officially opened.

The park not only provides space for plants and visitors but also serves as a habitat for fish, birds, and insects, contributing to the biodiversity of the harbor.
