Summer Carnival

Since its first edition in 1984, the Summer Carnival in Rotterdam has grown into a colorful and multicultural celebration inspired by Caribbean traditions. What began as an alternative to the winter carnival for Caribbean communities now attracts nearly a million visitors annually.

Festivities include a street parade with floats, brass band competitions, the election of the Carnival Queen, and markets filled with Caribbean food. Since 2013, the Summer Carnival has been part of the larger Rotterdam Unlimited festival.

Yet the event has also faced darker moments. In 2015, it was canceled for the first time due to a severe summer storm. The parade was held the following year. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was again canceled in 2020 and 2021.

In more recent years, incidents of violence have caused concern. During the 2023 edition, a shooting on the crowded Coolsingel left several people injured. A sixteen-year-old boy was shot by police. Stabbings also occurred, and 28 people were arrested.

In 2024, additional security measures were implemented, including preventive searches and relocating events to Ahoy. Nevertheless, fights and arrests were reported again.

Despite these challenges, the Summer Carnival remains a strong symbol of cultural pride and unity. Organizers and the municipality continue to work toward a safe celebration for all.
