The Wall on Sieltjesstraat

On Sieltjesstraat in Rotterdam stands a wall of profound meaning. It is the last remnant of Loods 24, the location from which nearly 7,000 Rotterdam Jews were deported during World War II. Once a tobacco warehouse, it became a holding point under Nazi occupation. The first transport left on July 30, 1942. Today, the wall is part of Plein Loods 24, a memorial square designed by Paul Achterberg. It includes the Jewish Children’s Monument with 686 names, a commemorative bench, five lights, and a symbolic crescent-shaped mast. In 2022, LEVENS 10.000 STENEN was added: a winding path with 10,000 unique stones, one for each life lost. The wall and square serve as a solemn reminder of the past—and a vow never to forget.
