Anton Mussert

Right here, where you're standing now, was once the beating heart of the NSB, the Dutch National Socialist Movement. This is where Anton Adriaan Mussert ran his political operation during one of the darkest chapters in the Netherlands' history. 

Mussert was born in Utrecht in 1894, and his early life took an unexpected turn when he was rejected from military officer training because of his height. Rather than giving up on ambition, he channeled his energy into civil engineering, graduating cum laude from the Technische Hogeschool in Delft in 1918. It was a promising start for a man whose legacy would become deeply troubling. By 1931, Mussert had founded the NSB and positioned himself as its leader. What many people don't realize is that he was not, at first, a committed anti-Semite. Jewish members were even welcomed into the movement in its early days. 

That changed after his personal meeting with Adolf Hitler, after which Mussert gradually adopted Nazi ideology and aligned himself with German occupation policies. When the Netherlands was liberated, Mussert was arrested and tried for collaboration. On 7 May 1946, he was executed at the Waalsdorpervlakte.
