That little bronze dog curled up near the Servaas Bridge is not some generic city decoration. His name is Biru, and he belonged to a local artist named Joop Hekman, who walked these exact canals with him for years.
Joop was a familiar figure along the Singels, and wherever Joop went, Biru followed. When Joop headed inside for the day, Biru would settle down right around this spot and doze off while the canal life carried on around him. Neighbors got used to seeing him there. The dog became part of the street itself.
In 1997, when Joop turned 75, the neighborhood surprised him with a gift: a bronze statue of Biru placed exactly where the dog used to sleep. Joop reportedly had no idea it was coming. The statue captures Biru in that familiar resting pose, paws tucked in, completely at ease, as if he just wandered over from Joop's studio.
Biru was not a famous dog. He did not rescue anyone or perform any remarkable feat. He just showed up every day, napped in the sun, and made people smile. Honestly, there are worse ways to earn a statue.
