Dick Bruna

Dick Bruna, known worldwide as the creator of miffy, perhaps the most famous bunny in the world, saw the light of day on 23 August 1927 in Utrecht, the Netherlands. His creative life resulted in writing and illustrating no fewer than 124 picture books. He also designed many posters and covers for the Zwarte Beertjes pocket book series. His unique style and heart-warming stories soon made him popular, both in the Netherlands and internationally. 

Bruna's creative path began under difficult circumstances. During World War II, his family went into hiding at the Loosdrechtse Plassen. Without the opportunity to go to school, he filled his days with drawing and painting, inspired by the nature around him. This period laid the foundation for his later work. Moreover, he met several designers and illustrators who worked for his father's publishing house and spent time at Broese bookshop in Utrecht, which only strengthened his love for books and art.

Utrecht played a central role in Bruna's life and work. Not only was he born and grew up there, but he also lived there almost all his life. His studio was located at Jeruzalemstraat 3, close to the Dom, the beating heart of the city. Bruna's contribution to Utrecht was not limited to his books; he also designed posters and logos for the city. In recognition of his influence and contribution to Utrecht's cultural wealth, he received the city medal in 1987 with praise for his 'illustrious imagination that has raised the city to a higher plane'.After an impressive career spanning sixty years, Bruna decided to retire in 2011. Dick Bruna leaves an indelible impression in the city of Utrecht, a city he enriched with his work and presence. He died on 16 February 2017, Dick Bruna was 89 years old.
