Galgenwaard

In the east of the city is Stadion Galgenwaard, the proud home of FC Utrecht. This 23,750-seat stadium is known for its modern facilities, including VIP lounges and restaurants, and has been one of the most advanced stadiums in the world since it opened in August 1982.

Interestingly, contrary to what one might think, the name 'Galgenwaard' does not refer to a history of executions. In medieval times, it was known as Galghenwert, and the area was mainly used for farming and gardening. 

The idea for a stadium in this area arose in the 1930s, when Utrecht needed a versatile sports venue. However, the construction of the original stadium faced challenges. The Ministry of War saw it as a nuisance to the field of fire, given its location within Utrecht's fortress belt. In addition, the economic crisis created additional complications.

Despite these obstacles, the new Stadion Galgenwaard was realised, a project ahead of its time. The design emphasises the proximity of the stands to the pitch, creating an intense atmosphere. The sloping roof not only provides weather protection, but also improves acoustics, making the stadium suitable for concerts and events as well.

A recent development is that FC Utrecht has owned the stadium since December 2023. This move guarantees the future of the Galgenwaard and strengthens the bond between the club and its home ground. With this, the Galgenwaard remains an important symbol of sport and community spirit in Utrecht.
