Herman Berkien Statue, Ledig Erf

The bronze figure sitting in the middle of Ledig Erf is Herman Berkien, and if you grew up in Utrecht, you probably know at least one of his songs by heart. This square, surrounded by café terraces and the everyday noise of the city, is exactly where a man like him belongs.

Herman Berkien was born in Utrecht in 1942 and never really left, in spirit or in subject matter. He was a singer and cabaret performer who turned his love for the city into music sharp enough to stick. His song "Utereg me stadje" became the official anthem of FC Utrecht, and to this day nearly 20,000 supporters belt it out in the stadium with full conviction. His other beloved song, "Als ik boven op de Dom sta," became something close to a second city hymn.

He was also a regular at the Winkel van Sinkel, Utrecht's famous comedy venue, where he made audiences laugh just as easily as he made them feel nostalgic. That combination of warmth and wit is rare.

Herman died at 63, still living in the city that inspired everything he made. His statue here does not just commemorate a performer. It marks a man who handed Utrecht its own soundtrack.
