Marco van Basten

Marco van Basten, born in Utrecht, is one of the most respected figures in Dutch football history. His footballing journey began at local Utrecht club EDO, followed by spells at UVV Utrecht and Elinkwijk. His extraordinary scoring ability stood out at a young age, leading many to see in him a future star.

Van Basten started his professional career at Ajax Amsterdam, where he quickly became one of the top footballers. With Ajax, he won three Eredivisie titles and the UEFA Cup. His achievements at Ajax led to a move to AC Milan in 1987.

At AC Milan, Van Basten achieved new successes. He played a key role in winning three Serie A titles and two European Cups. His talent was further recognised with winning the Ballon d'Or three times. Van Basten is considered one of the best strikers of his generation and one of the greatest Dutch footballers ever. His greatest international triumph came in 1988, when he became European champion with the Dutch team.

Although injuries shortened his active career, Van Basten remained active in football after his retirement. He worked as a coach, commentator, football analyst and technical director. He was head coach of the Dutch national team and clubs like Heerenveen, Ajax and AZ Alkmaar.

In Utrecht, where his career began, a sports complex is named after him. Together with Wesley Sneijder, he is among the most illustrious footballers born in this city. His contribution to football, both on and off the pitch, remains invaluable to the sport.
