Rietveld Schröder House

Utrecht is home to the Rietveld Schröderhuis, an extraordinary building designed by Gerrit Rietveld in 1924. This house is a wonderful example of De Stijl architecture, a movement known for its geometric shapes, clean lines and primary colours.

Gerrit Rietveld, an important Dutch architect, was one of the founders of this movement. His work focused on simplicity and functionality, befitting the modern age. The Rietveld Schröder House is perhaps his best-known work. The design breaks with traditional building styles and combines function with artistic elements of De Stijl. This house served not only as a residence, but also as an experimental laboratory, focusing on the idea of a 'total work of art'.

Visitors can tour the Rietveld Schröder House to learn more about its history and design. The house is well preserved, including the original sliding walls and colour schemes. Besides guided tours, the Schröderhuis Foundation also organises lectures and exhibitions.

There are more buildings in Utrecht that reflect De Stijl, but the Rietveld Schröderhuis remains the most famous. The Zonnehof building in Amersfoort, also designed by Rietveld, is another example. Like the Rietveld Schröderhuis, the Zonnehof has been preserved in its original state. Other examples in Utrecht include the department store 'De Bijenkorf' and the 'Schröderstraat', both inspired by De Stijl and designed by Rietveld. Together, these buildings show the influence and heritage of De Stijl movement in the Netherlands.
