Sports in Utrecht

Utrecht is known for its passion for sports. Many sports are played here and there are numerous sports clubs and associations that support and promote these sports.

When you think of sports in Utrecht, you think of football, hockey, korfball, cycling, athletics, tennis and skating. These sports all have an important place in the city's sports culture and have become increasingly popular among residents in recent years.

Utrecht has many sports clubs and associations belonging to the aforementioned sports. FC Utrecht, for instance, is a football club known for its fanatical supporters and strong performance on the pitch. Hockey club Kampong has also made a big name for itself, both nationally and internationally. And what about Korfbalvereniging DOS'46, a club that has won many championships and is known for its technical and tactical skills.

But Utrecht is not only known for its sports clubs. The city also regularly organises major sporting events. For instance, the Tour de France started in Utrecht in 2015 and the city was also the setting for the start of both the Giro and the Vuelta. Stadium de Galgenwaard also hosted the successful European Women's Football Championship. The Utrecht Marathon and the Singelloop Utrecht are also annual events in which thousands of people participate. And did you know that Messi, perhaps the best footballer of all time, even briefly walked through Utrecht. Unfortunately not to play for FC Utrecht but because as a rookie he participated in the European Under-21 Championship where he played a match in the Galgenwaard. Who would have thought in 2005 that he would have achieved what he has achieved now?

Finally, many famous sportsmen come from Utrecht. Think of Marco van Basten, former top footballer and coach of the Dutch national team and Ajax, among others. But also Dafne Schippers, multiple world sprint champion and Olympic medallist, is a true Utrecht hero. In this list, Anton Geesink should not be forgotten either. Anton Geesink, from Utrecht, caused a furore by becoming the first non-Japanese to become judo world champion in 1961. He is a judo icon and brought Utrecht worldwide recognition. These famous sportsmen have all contributed to Utrecht's rich sports history and are an inspiration to many young athletes in the city.
