St. Janskerk

A historical monument and architectural wonder, Utrecht's Janskerk is dedicated to John the Baptist. Founded shortly after 1040 by Bishop Bernold, this church played a crucial role in the city's medieval history. As one of Utrecht's five chapter churches - alongside the Dom, Salvator Church, Pieterskerk and Mariakerk - the Janskerk has a rich and varied past.

After 1580, when the Reformation brought a reversal in religious practices, the city of Utrecht confiscated the books and manuscripts of the dissolved monasteries. This collection was transferred to the choir of the Janskerk in 1584. With the establishment of Utrecht University in 1636, this valuable collection was given a new purpose as the University Library, a function that underlines the church's rich intellectual history.

A poignant symbol for the Janskerk is the statue of Anne Frank standing in front of the church. This statue serves as a reverent reminder of her legacy and the history she represents.
